Maduro Regime: New EU Sanctions Expected Soon

ONE.- The acting president of Venezuela, Juan Guaidódeclared in an interview with the Austrian weekly Profil that he expects new sanctions from the European Union (EU) against Caracas in the coming days.

When asked if he expects a toughening of EU sanctions against the regime of Nicolás MaduroGuaidó responded: “Yes, in the next few days.”

The opposition leader considers that The sanctions are working to pressure the Venezuelan regimealthough he recognizes that in Europe there are doubts about whether to expand them.

“There are doubts in Europe about whether the sanctions were effective or not. I think the current process shows that they were very useful,” Guaidó said.

“There are 28 countries, so it is difficult to find a consensus. I hope more and more that the EU will take a stronger position. But until now we have found it difficult to draw Europe’s attention to the Venezuelan crisis“, declared the president of the National Assembly in an excerpt of the interview published today.

The interview with the Venezuelan opposition leader took place last Friday, when he had not yet been recognized as president in charge by important EU countries such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden or Austria.

“Venezuela is bleeding because people are leaving the country en masse due to lack of food and medicine. I think that my recognition as interim president would be fair, and it would also be a tribute to those people who continue to endure, even though the fight has been very brutal.“said Guaidó.

In the event that presidential elections are held, The opposition leader affirmed that EU observers will be essential to certify that these elections take place in conditions of democratic freedom.

“Free elections in Venezuela require that they be carried out under qualified international supervision. And I think that is where Europe plays an important role,” he stated.
