ATP BRISBANE – No coincidence. Tomáš Macháč (25) and Matěj Vocel (28) show that their sensational run to the quarterfinals of last year’s US Open was definitely not accidental. In Brisbane, the Czech pair dealt with the Monaco-Dutch duo Hugo Nys, Sem Verbeek (31) after a three-set battle 3:6, 7:5 and 10:7 and advanced to the semi-finals.
Nys/Verbeek – Macháč/Vocel 6:3, 5:7, 7:10
They enjoy playing games together. And the tighter the ending, the better for them. Macháč and Vocel scored another win at the tournament in Brisbane, which had signs of a tennis drama.
At the same time, the Czech couple did not enter the duel well at all, when they quickly took a 0:3 loss. And he couldn’t delete it either. Verbeek, who won the Grand Slam title alongside Kateřina Siniaková at last year’s Wimbledon, was a more active and accurate pair with Nys in the first set and deservedly won it 6:3.
In the second set, it seemed for a long time that a shortened game would have to decide the winner. The Czech pair had to fend off the only break chance in the sixth game, otherwise both pairs handled the serve superbly. This was true until 6:5 for Macháč and Vocel, who succeeded in the return for the first time in the match at the best possible time and won the set 7:5.
In the final super-tiebreak, it seemed for a long time that the journey of the Czechs would end. Verbeek and Nys already led 7:3, but even that was not enough for them in the end. Macháč and Vocel’s seven points in a row completely turned the course around and after an hour and 28 minutes they could celebrate their well-deserved progress.
The Czechs thus successfully followed up on the previous duel with the Americans Robert Cash and James Tracy, who also won 10:7 in the final super-tiebreak.
In the fight for the final, they can challenge the seeded number one, the British Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool. But they must first deal with the American pair of Sebastian Korda and Brandon Nakashima.
