The 74th German Championships begin tomorrow, Thursday, in Cloppenburg. The country’s best players will fight for the titles until Sunday. In the preliminary reports of the past few days we have already taken a look at the favorites in all disciplines. In the women’s doubles there is now a new exciting pairing that wants to shake up the field: Isabel Lohau and Yvonne Li.
Isabel Lohau actually wanted to make her DM comeback after five years with Stine Küspert. But Küspert had to cancel her participation due to a foot injury. Now comes the surprise news the evening before the tournament begins: Isabel Lohau is competing with individual expert and series champion Yvonne Li!
“I’m very happy that I can now take part. Yvonne and I have never played doubles together, so it might be a bit of a surprise. But basically I’m optimistic that we’ll work well together on the field, so that we can annoy or perhaps beat anyone,” explains Isabel Lohau.
After Stine Küspert’s cancellation, the 2022 vice-European champion in women’s doubles spontaneously contacted Yvonne Li, who actually only wanted to compete in her flagship discipline, the singles.
“When Bell asked me, my fingers were already itching! I haven’t played doubles in a DM for a long time. I hope my hand can cope with everything and otherwise I have complete confidence in Isabel’s abilities,” jokes Yvonne Li. During preparation she had to struggle with tendonitis in her hand, but reported fit for Cloppenburg in time.
So two of the most successful German badminton players of recent years will compete together in Cloppenburg. What’s in it for this spontaneously formed pairing? The answer can be seen in Cloppenburg from Thursday to Sunday.
Tickets for all days are still available at www.badminton-events.de or at the box office.
