Because he played the whole match against Marseille.

But there was no goal for the 33-year-old from Egypt. After a wild public argument with a long tirade of the very rare against Arne Slot in front of the camera, Salah went to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Most people might have thought that Salah’s days at Liverpool were coming to an end, and they were.

Ronny Deila recently finished coaching Atlanta United, he is back in Norway and watched the match with TV 2.

– It was great. When he is upright he is at his best, but he becomes a bit passive. He needs more in the box, because he is good there. He stays a little too wide, says Deila on broadcast.

For now he is back from the African Championship after losing in the bronze final, when Salah missed a penalty:

Salah was on the pitch for all the minutes on Wednesday night. The local newspaper Liverpool Echo gave Salah a 7 on the stock exchange (1 to 10).

“… he did more than enough. Still looking for momentum after his first start since November. It will come with more time,” writes the Liverpool Echo.

It took time before there was a goal in Marseille, but in overtime in the 1st half, the home team took a defensive line-up. The ball was about 21 meters away. Dominik Szoboszlai was ready. Mohamed Salah was ready. Szoboszlai sped up and shot, the whole Marseille wall jumped as high as they could, the ball went along the grass and into the goal. Keeper Gerónimo Rulli was in contact with the ball, but it sat in the net to Rulli’s left.

Former Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has done well in Marseille, after he had to leave United. The club and the player agreed to part ways in August 2023. Greenwood was good against Liverpool, making several solid finishes. But he didn’t get the ball in the goal.

One who put the ball in the goal was goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. Who steered a mix of shots and crosses from Jeremie Frimpong into his own goal. In overtime, Cody Gakpo made sure it was a superior victory, 0–3. Liverpool rolled up nicely and Gakpo put the ball safely into the goal.

Ronny Deila was a guest on TV 2. He thinks Gakpo should get more playing time.

– He is a guy you can trust. Offensively and defensively, so he is a player I like to see on the field, says Deila.

This was Liverpool’s second win in six games in 2026, following four Premier League draws and victory over Barnsley in the FA Cup. In the Champions League, things have gone better. The Reds are in any case further in the Champions League, and are assured of the round of 16 with a victory for Qarabag in the last game, probably a draw will do to avoid the playoffs.
