Lions Promotion: Third Division History & Playoff Odds

Many fans ask themselves: How realistic is it that TSV 1860 Munich will be promoted to the second division at the end of the season? After the 1-1 draw in Osnabrück – the third game in a row without a win – the Kauczinski team has 32 points. One thing is clear: the Lions need a winning streak.

We checked. At least statistically, with this result it is theoretically still possible to jump into the top three places – even if there have only been a few examples of such a feat since the introduction of the third league in 2008. The cases from the db24 statistics:

2010/2011: Dynamo Dresden also had 32 points after 21 match days. At the end of the season there were 65 points and third place. In the relegation, the Saxons prevailed against VfL Osnabrück after extra time and returned to the second division.

2011/2012: VfR Aalen got 31 points after 21 match days – and in the end was promoted directly to the second division with 64 points.

2014/2015: Holstein Kiel, the Lions’ later relegation opponent, was in tenth place with just 30 points after the 21st matchday. The North Germans were third at the finish – but failed in the promotion games to 1860. Thanks to Kai Bülow.

2015/2016: The Kickers from Würzburg only had 26 (!) points after the 21st matchday. After that, the Franconians only lost once, collected a total of 64 points and ended up in third place. Two relegation victories against MSV Duisburg led to the second division.

2016/2017: Jahn Regensburg also achieved the seemingly impossible with a furious final spurt. After 21 match days there were a meager 29 points. On the last matchday, the Upper Palatinate team secured third place with a 1-0 win in Münster – and then rose in the relegation zone. The 2-0 win in the Allianz Arena against 1860 is still painfully remembered by the Lions today. Holstein Kiel (at that time 30 points after 21 match days) even managed direct promotion as runner-up.

2019/2020: Two teams were well behind the current lions after the 21st matchday: Bayern II (26 points) and Kickers Würzburg (27). Both finished the season in first and second place. While champions Bayern II were not eligible for promotion, Würzburg celebrated their return to the second division as runners-up.

2023/2024: After the 21st matchday, Preußen Münster was only in eleventh place with 28 points. With a strong comeback, the traditional club moved up to second place (67 points) and returned directly to the second division.

db24 says: History shows: With 32 points after 21 match days, promotion is not yet ruled out. But Sixty now actually needs a two-point average to reach the goal. But can the decimated Lions team do that?
