American skier Lindsey Vonn won Saturday’s downhill in Zauchensee and achieved the 84th triumph of her World Cup career. Forty-one years old the competitor in the Austrian center confirmed her great form in the Olympic season, in which she claimed her second victory. In four races, she did not miss the podium even once.
Thus, she significantly increased her lead in the fight for the small globe. Vonnová won the opening race in St. Moritzi, when at the age of 41 she became the oldest winner in the history of the WC.
A day later, she finished second in the same resort and took third place in Val d’Isere. Saturday’s triumph was already her 45th downhill in the SP in her career. In addition, she was third in the super-G in Val d’Isere.
In Zauchensee, she started from the sixth place, she lost slightly in the first two sectors, but the second half of the course worked out great for her, to which she brought high speed and finished with a time of 1:06.24 minutes.
She beat the previous leader Kajsa Vickhoff Lie by 37 hundredths of a second. Jacqueline Wilesová, another American, finished third with a deficit of 0.48 seconds.
“I thought that I wouldn’t have a chance with starting number six, as there was a lot of fresh snow and I expected that the track would only ‘ride’ from the beginning. However, the organizers managed to do a great job and I had a great ride. This gives me more confidence for the next race,” Vonnová told Eurosport. In the overall ranking of the SP, she moved to the sixth place, losing 373 points to the leader Mikaela Schiffrinová, who did not start on Saturday.
The organizers had to shorten the track in the upper passage due to heavy snow, as they could not remove the new covering during the night. Only 2160 meters were waiting for the skiers. The race had to be interrupted for over 20 minutes after Magdalena Eggerová fell.
The Austrian skier ended up in a protective net, quickly got up, but injured her leg and had to be taken off the slope by a helicopter.
