Back from the winter break, Ligue 1 is returning to its good habits for the first day of 2026 with a weekend already punctuated by controversies around refereeing decisions. It started strong on Friday evening, with Toulouse-Lens, it continued this Saturday, with Lille-Rennes.
Visibly upset by the refereeing, Lille coach Bruno Genesio did not appear at a press conference after the northern club’s defeat at home against the Bretons (0-2).
Létang’s attitude, “a habit” blows Beye
In the wake of an electric meeting, which turned upside down when referee Éric Wattellier excluded Alexsandro (13th), Losc announced to all the media present in the mixed zone that Bruno Genesio would not come during the traditional speech which follows all championship matches, citing the coach’s “personal reasons”.
At half-time, the Lyonnais had to be held back by several players as he advanced towards Éric Wattellier. In the process, club president Olivier Létang called out to the referee: “You know what you did, it’s a shame, a scandal. »
Habib Beye, the coach of Stade Rennes, regretted this tense climate established and attacked the attitude of the Lille president. “A bit as usual, the president (Olivier Létang, Editor’s note), tried to create a context. This should never happen again today in football. (…) We must help those involved in the game, whether they are footballers or referees, and this type of pressure that we can have at half-time destabilizes an entire context. »
“An essential decision” for Wattelier
For his part, the referee of the match Éric Wattelier explained his decision at the Ligue 1 + microphone following the match. He invoked a “situation of annihilation of a clear scoring opportunity”, that is to say “when an attacker is able to create a clear scoring opportunity”. “The attacker had control of the ball, he was heading towards the goal, there was proximity to the goal, so all the elements were there. »
On the question of timing (Alexsandro was excluded at the very start of the meeting), he justified it in the same breath: “It is an unavoidable decision which must be taken, whether at the first or the 90th of a meeting. There is no question of timing in these types of situations. »
“I don’t pay attention to what happens in the past,” he said about Lille’s anger. I referee a match, I make decisions that seem fairest to me. »
