AOn May 2nd, 1984 – everyone remembers it like it was yesterday – the then second division team Schalke 04 met FC Bayern in the DFB Cup, the game ended 6:6. Olaf Thon, who turned 18 the day before, was the hero of the evening as the scorer of three goals. The other hero of the evening was Rolf Töpperwien from ZDF, who expertly interviewed Thon on the pitch after the final whistle – surrounded by euphoric Schalke fans who didn’t keep a millimeter of distance. Then Töpperwien asked: “Is it true that you slept in FC Bayern bed linen?” Yes, replied Thon, smiling and casually, “that’s true.”
