The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has appointed three new coaches to strengthen its national setup, with all three set to start work next month.
Harry Hartono will join as Men’s Singles Coach, Yeoh Kay Bin as Junior Men’s Singles Coach, and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif as Women’s Doubles Coach.
The appointments are part of BAM’s push to strengthen its coaching structure and give greater attention to player development from the junior ranks up.
Harry and Yeoh will work alongside Datuk Tey Seu Bock, who heads the men’s singles squad, along with coaches K. Yogendran, Alvin Chew, and Goh Giap Chin.
Meanwhile, Mohd Zakry will team up with Women’s Doubles Head Coach Rosman Razak, Ching Kai Feng, and Amelia Anscelly.
Harry previously served as an assistant coach in Indonesia, while Yeoh coached Olympic bronze medalist Lee Zii Jia, and Mohd Zakry is a former Malaysian badminton player specialising in men’s doubles.
No More ‘My Players Only’ Mentality
BAM Performance Committee Chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei said the new coaches were chosen based on their experience and ability to help Malaysian players compete consistently on the international stage.
Singles Director Kenneth Jonassen had previously submitted a list of coaching candidates with a focus on continuity for young players, said the former world number one.
I also met with Doubles Director Rexy Mainaky, who personally proposed Zakry as one of the candidates.
Lee stressed that teamwork among all coaches—whether handling senior or junior players—is crucial.
I always say that we are one family and must work collectively. I do not want a situation where someone says, ‘I only take care of my own players. We need to look after everyone together.
Starting Next Month With a Bigger Budget
The appointments come after BAM Secretary-General Datuk Kenny Goh earlier revealed that the association had increased its budget significantly to expand the junior squad and bring in more coaches.
He said BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had emphasized the need to focus more heavily on player development.
Yeoh will report for duty on 3 February, followed by Harry on 10 February and Zakry on 20 February.
For Malaysian badminton fans, the new coaching lineup signals BAM’s commitment to rebuilding depth in the national squad—especially in men’s singles, where Malaysia has struggled to produce consistent world-class players in recent years.
Earlier this month, BAM revealed that it needs at least RM55 million annually to cover its operational costs.
