League 2 Results: Leader Extends First-Round Lead

Marítimo won 3-2, at Chaves, on Sunday afternoon, and is increasingly the leader (36 points).

The green and red teams even started with the ball, but it was the brave Trás-os-Montes who opened the scoring in the first minute. João Teixeira received a low cross from the right, after some great work from Esajas, and finished with an excellent placement, with his right foot.

The Madeira team reacted very well, took control of the game and managed to create several opportunities in the initial phase. The islanders insisted so much that they equalized in the 16th minute, through Romain Correia. The maritime captain took advantage of a loose ball following a corner kick and made it 1-1.

Marítimo was on top and creating opportunities to turn the result around, but it was the Flavienses who took the advantage again, through a set piece. Carraça took a free kick from the left and Tiago Simões headed it in easily to make it 2-1.

The game was always very warmwith the players playing each move very aggressively – so much so that Roberto received a straight red in the 37th minute, for hitting Madsen with the sole of his boot, in the torso area. The Chaves forward was playing his 300th game in League 2 (he is the second best scorer in the history of the competition, with 100 goals, just behind Pires’ 114).

With numerical superiority, Marítimo confirmed its dominance. Even so, the equalizing goal only arrived in the 75th minute by Tejón. It was a great goal, from outside the area, first time, following a corner kick. The ball hit the bar with a bang and went in.

At 90+5′, Afonso Freitas made it 3-2 and completed the turnaround, after being thrown onto the back of the Flaviense defense, with a great pass from Guirassy.

Marítimo hadn’t won in Chaves since 1995. Eight games had been played in Trás-os-Montes, between the two teams, since then. At the end of the first round, Chaves is in 4th place with 26 points. He is ten behind the leader Marítimo.
