The Latvian men’s handball team defeated the visiting Great Britain 35:27 in the first match of the 2028 European Championship pre-qualification in Nottingham on Wednesday.
The return match is scheduled for Sunday in Jelgava. The winner of the sum of two matches enters the main qualification tournament.
Endijs Kušners, Valdis Kalniņš and Mārtiņš Misulis scored seven goals each in the Latvian national team, who made eight, nine and ten shots on goal, respectively. Francisco Pereira was the top scorer in the British national team with 11 accurate shots.
The head coach of the Latvian national team, Margots Valkovskis, has included 19 players in the list of candidates, nine of whom play in foreign clubs. Dainis Krištopāns did not help the Latvian national team in the away match, who will only play in the return match.
Due to injuries, Jānis Pavels Valkovskis, Nikita Pančenko, Artūrs Kugis, Andis Bors, Renārs GrebeĆnikovs, Nils Kreutzbergs, Intars Jomants, Raivis Gorbunovs and Elgar Kushners did not join the national team in this meeting.
The 2028 European Championship will take place in Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
