The question of the future of the Lakers has often arisen since the arrival of Luka Dončić as the new cornerstone of the project. Despite a solid balance sheet and stated ambitions, some internal observers believe that the current structure does not really make it possible to aim for a title. Behind the scenes, criticism of the construction of the squad is becoming more and more direct.
Former recruiter of the franchise, a scout who passed through Los Angeles delivered a harsh analysis of the situation. According to him, the problem does not come from the talent on the floor, but from the decisions made upstream. In his eyes, the sports management failed to adapt its vision to a team now built around Dončić, while trying to extend the open window with LeBron James and Austin Reaves.
For this former member of the front office, the balance of the workforce is far from optimal. He points out in particular the absence of versatile profiles capable of impacting on both sides of the field, a glaring lack in a league where the slightest weakness is exploited in the playoffs. Despite good collective streaks, he believes that the current base strongly limits the team’s real ceiling.
A frontal disavowal of the strategy led by Rob Pelinka
The scout did not try to cut corners when discussing the role of the general manager. “Having worked with Rob before, I have absolutely no faith in him to build a team capable of winning a title in the Luka era. If they really want a ring with him, they need to find a new basketball executive. He considers that if management had better identified the real players capable of making the difference, the Lakers’ recent journey could have been very different, especially after the title won in 2020.
This season, however, the results remain encouraging with a fifth place in the West and a record of 23 victories for 13 defeats. But for this seasoned observer, these figures mask a structural fragility. Without an overhaul of the front office and a more aggressive strategy around Luka Dončić, he doubts that the Lakers can really transform this dynamic into a new NBA title.
