During the past hours, social media platforms circulated a video clip showing American basketball star Kyrie Irving wearing a T-shirt bearing the image of Palestinian journalist and athlete Saleh Al-Jaafrawi, in a gesture that received widespread interaction and re-shed light on Al-Jaafrawi’s biography after his martyrdom.
Saleh Al-Jaafrawi is known as a young Palestinian journalist, in addition to his sporting career, as he was a table tennis champion and represented Palestine in several international competitions.
After his martyrdom, pictures spread of him participating in sports tournaments, in which he appears carrying the Palestinian flag, in scenes that reintroduced him to public opinion not only as a journalist but as an athlete who carried his cause to the competition arenas.
The circulated footage showed Irving wearing the shirt with Jaafarawi’s picture on it during one of the tournaments, in a move that observers considered a message of solidarity and honor to the memory of the Palestinian sports journalist, and an affirmation of his humanitarian and sporting presence, far from reducing him to being just a name on the lists of martyrs.
On October 12, 2025, days after declaring a cessation of war in Gaza; Palestinian sources reported that Al-Jaafrawi was killed by gunfire from gunmen cooperating with the occupation in the Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood, south of Gaza City, while he was documenting scenes of devastation with his camera.
