Kiel New Sports Hall: €18M Westring Project

The replacement for the Holstein Hall is being built on the Westring. In the future, schools and clubs will be able to play sports in the new building in the Ravensberg district.

There are still too few sports halls in Kiel. Due to the impending loss of the Holstein Hall, which will have to make way for the new KSV stadium, demand will continue to increase. The city lacks 16 indoor fields for schools and clubs. The two-story new building will at least provide some relief. Two hall areas, each 22 by 44 meters in size, will be created one above the other, which can be divided in half by partition walls. The upper floor has a ceiling height of seven meters, the basement 5.5 meters.

Double-decker sports hall for basketball, volleyball, handball and badminton

The sports facility between Kleiststrasse and Niebuhrstrasse is used by students from RBZ Wirtschaft and Holstein Kiel (handball and cheerleading). At the same time, it will be a venue for regional competitions. The hall is designed for basketball, volleyball, handball and badminton, among other things.

Building department head Doris Grondke hopes construction will begin in April. The prerequisite is the approval of the council meeting. Before the committee decides on the construction, the plans for the new hall should be presented to the responsible local council in Ravensberg/Brunswik/Düsternbrook.

The name of the new hall also needs to be decided. As early as November 2024, a jury consisting of Doris Grondke, the headmaster of the RBZ Wirtschaft, Gerhard Müller, and Holstein-Kiel managing director Wolfgang Schwenke voted in favor of naming the sports facility after the Kiel decathlon Olympic champion Willi Holdorf. “As the first German king of athletes, Willi Holdorf is an icon of sport with Kiel roots. He has had a decisive influence on Kiel sport,” the jury explained its verdict at the time.

The construction of the new hall is expected to cost around 18.3 million euros. For comparison: the new sports facility in Wellsee costs seven million euros less. The higher costs are due, on the one hand, to the larger hall (3,800 to 2,067 square meters), but also to the construction conditions. The double-decker hall, which is over twelve meters high, is built slightly into the ground so that it fits architecturally into the surroundings on the Westring. Such civil engineering work is usually costly. Completion is expected in autumn 2028.
