Kampl Retires: Football Career Ends

In an interview with Sky Kevin Kampl announced his immediate end to his career on the sidelines of the game against FC Bayern Munich. The 35-year-old midfield strategist, who was bid farewell before the game, said that after careful consideration he had come to the decision to hang up his boots for good. “It’s clear to me: That’s it for me in football in general. I won’t continue,” said Kampl, who is drawing a line under his years of professional career.

The veteran said the main reason for this step was his desire to have more time for his private life. He now wants to go home to his family, which is the most important thing for him at the moment. Kampl categorically ruled out a commitment to another club; he simply couldn’t imagine starting over somewhere else after his time in Leipzig.

Despite saying goodbye to active gaming, Kampl doesn’t want to turn his back on the sport completely. He emphasized that he would try to stay in football in another capacity. He looked back with great gratitude on his “wonderful career,” in which he played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, winning the DFB Cup twice with the latter.
