Jubilation Arrests: 63 Detained After Celebrations

Initially festive, these gatherings generated limited disturbances of public order, particularly in the Paris region, where many supporters gathered on the Champs-Élysées and in the Barbès district.

Arrests took place, on the sidelines of the scenes of jubilation which followed Senegal’s victory against Morocco, in the final of the African Cup of Nations, on Sunday January 18 in the evening.

In total, notes the Ministry of the Interior to the Figaro63 individuals were arrested during spontaneous gatherings on public roads.

These gatherings, initially festive, generated disturbances to public order, particularly in the Paris region, where many supporters marched in the streets of certain neighborhoods, notably in Barbès, in the 18th arrondissement, but also on the Champs-Élysées, despite a prefectural decree published on Friday prohibiting gatherings of supporters on the avenue. On Sunday evening, limited excesses also took place in Lyon and Avignon.

The Ministry of the Interior specifies that these disturbances nevertheless remained “boundaries”and were systematically contained by the police. 14 police officers were slightly injured during these interventions.
