This Friday brought sad news for Santa Fe football: José Luis “La Polaca” Burtovoy, former goalkeeper and historic figure for both Unión and Colón, has passed away. He was 79 years old and lived in the city of Santo Tomé. The news was confirmed through a statement, which also informed that his remains will be laid to rest at the Sentir funeral home in Santo Tomé, where family and friends are gathering to say their final goodbyes.
Burtovoy left a mark on Santa Fe football. He made his professional debut with Colón in the 1960s and, years later, played a leading role in one of the most important moments in Unión’s history, being part of the team that achieved promotion to the First Division in 1974. In addition to his time with the Santa Fe clubs, he was also part of major institutions like Independiente and Boca, although he was always especially remembered for his journey in Santa Fe and for the respect he earned on both sides of the city.
His death had a strong impact on the local football community, which today says goodbye to a figure from another era, one of those names that are part of the great memory of Santa Fe football.
