Chelsea are set to appoint John Terry as manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca, according to former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys.
The latter believes that the former Blues defender deserves to manage his first professional club at Stamford Bridge, after a brilliant playing career with the team.
Chelsea is looking for a replacement in Marsca.
Chelsea sacked Maresca on New Year’s Day following a run of poor results which saw the Blues fall from the top of the Premier League table. While they were only three points behind Arsenal a month ago, they are now fifteen points behind. Although they are still in contention in the League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League, the club has decided to start looking for a new coach. And Keys, who says he speaks on behalf of Chelsea fans, believes Terry deserves his chance, even though he has never managed a professional club before. He has not held a position in football since his stint as coach at the club’s academy in 2023.
Keys wrote on X: “If I were a Chelsea fan I would want to see JT get his chance. He’s a pure Chelsea product – he’s coached elsewhere before – and there’s no reason he can’t do what Lampard is doing at Coventry, with better means. »
A report from Football.London claims the Blues have no plans to appoint Terry, who himself said he was shocked by Maresca’s departure.
He said on TikTok: “Enzo Maresca has just been sacked by Chelsea and honestly I’m in complete shock, I didn’t expect it at all. I know things haven’t been going the way he would have liked lately. We could clearly feel the tensions.
I received so many calls this morning after the announcement and everyone expects me to know. “I have no idea, I’m not in the first team so I don’t know.
“This is just my opinion, but there was clearly tension between the coach and the owner, and they came to this decision. »
