The Dallas Cowboys failed to make the playoffs for the second time in a row with a 7-9-1 record. Nevertheless, owner Jerry Jones has big goals for the future.
The Dallas Cowboys missed the upcoming playoffs in this year’s NFL season. Nevertheless, long-time owner and general manager Jerry Jones didn’t let a sensational statement stop him.
The 83-year-old said in the Cowboys’ final postseason press conference that he still has goals and dreams for his time as franchise owner. His biggest goal: “My goal in life is to retire as the owner who has won the most Super Bowls.”
As an assessment: Jones has three wins with his Cowboys, which he won relatively quickly after taking over in Texas in 1989. He led the franchise to win the Lombardi Trophy with two different head coaches in 1993, 1994 and 1996.
Jones well behind Kraft in Super Bowl victories
However, that only puts him in second place in the ownership ranking of Super Bowl winners. This is led by Robert Kraft, who could go far again with the New England Patriots in the postseason after a 14-3 season.
That doesn’t stop Jones: “That’s my goal. We have three. How many more do I need? [Robert Kraft] has how many? Six? So I have work to do. After all, I’m already second on this list.” In the event of a Patriots triumph, it would be the seventh Lombardi Trophy for Kraft, who could extend the lead.
So Jones would need a few championships to catch up. “America’s Team” is facing an important offseason anyway. In the coming draft, the Cowboys have two first-round picks, but also two expiring contracts of top performers.
Running back Javonte Williams and wide receiver George Pickens could become free agents. Jones sees this calmly and hopes for an extension in both cases.
Nevertheless, he also says: “Every team has gaps. That’s how business works. But I still see six teams in the playoffs that weren’t there last year. I know that it can happen. It’s all very close.”
Jones on the offseason: “We’re going to do dramatic things”
At the end of his remarks it became concrete. When asked about the upcoming offseason, he reacted as follows: “One thing is certain: This offseason is very important. We want to, while Dak (Prescott, d. Red.) perform the way he has done for us so far, improve our own performance and be better than this year. The combination of these things gives us the incentive to, dare I say, blow the budget to get something done now. Yes, we’re going to do some dramatic things.”
Jones’ son Stephen, who is also vice president, said of his father that he would “give up a lot of the things that matter most to win another Super Bowl.”
