Author of an MVP performance against the Clippers this weekend (50 points), Jaylen Brown has proclaimed himself the best “two-way player” in the NBA. A big statement that the Celtics star can support through the numbers.
Before diving into the stats, a quick reminder: a “two-way player” in the NBA is a player capable of truly impacting both sides of the court, at the same time very strong in attack et in defense.
In his prime, Kawhi Leonard was the epitome of an elite “two-way player”: 25 to 30 points per night and All-NBA / DPOY caliber defense. Counterexample, Luka Doncic is not a “two-way player”, he who remains a weak link in his own half despite historic offensive production.
Jaylen Brown to @tvabby on a night he matched his career-high of 50 points and guarded Kawhi Leonard and James Harden:
“I feel like I’m the best two-way player in the game.”
“Tonight was one of those special nights, where I felt like every shot was going in.”

Saturday night, Jaylen Brown was rightly opposed to Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers. The opportunity for him to send a very big message: 50 points at 18/26 shooting (6/10 at 3-points, 8/10 at free throws), while helping to limit Kawhi – then hot – to 22 points (6/17 shooting).
This performance represents the culmination of an exceptional series. Since December 1st, Jaylen Brown is:
- 10 games out of 12 with at least 30 points including 9 consecutive (Larry Bird’s record equaled in Boston)
- 33 points per game at 54.4% shooting, 40.9% 3-point shooting, 79.8% free throws
The 2024 Finals MVP has never been so strong and complete offensively. We obviously knew his athleticism and his ability to attack the rim, but Brown was not really considered a “natural” scorer like his teammate Jayson Tatum. We even remember the mockery about its handle and its left hand limits. Today, no one is laughing anymore.
While JT is in the infirmary, JB has the keys to the Celtics truck and drives it like a boss. Brown is simply unstoppable at mid-distance, both in volume and efficiency (more than 50% success on around 11 attempts per match). Pull-up, fadeaway… anything goes. His 3-point shot is also solid, he converts almost 80% of his shots at the rim, and he has never caused as many free throws as at the moment (8.7 per game since the beginning of December, 7.5 this season). All this while clearly being the number 1 offensive option, and therefore targeted by opposing defenses night after night.
The icing on the cake: Jaylen Brown also had his most prolific passing season (5 per game), despite a logical increase in ball losses.
On the other side of the field, the defensive figures also speak in its favor:
- Opposing players shoot just 39.3% when Brown is the closest defender
- This is the 2nd best percentage in the NBA, behind Cason Wallace and Victor Wembanyama
According to NBC Sports Bostonwho cites figures from BBall IndexJaylen Brown is the “star” outside player who defends the most against the opponent’s best player (11% of the time) in the current NBA, and is often responsible for a player who is part of the opponent’s three highest talent levels (57% of the time). This makes his defensive numbers even more impressive, as JB isn’t one to hide on a very limited striker.
From @ESPNInsights
Brown is holding opponents to a 39.37% FG pct as the closest defender per GeniusIQ, ranking 2nd among 111 players to defend at least 300 FGA this season, behind Cason Wallace (38.06%) and just ahead of Victor Wembanyama (39.40%). https://t.co/bcGHO3PJ1O

So, Jaylen Brown “best two-way player” in the NBA?
Everyone will have their own opinion, especially since defensive impact is more difficult to measure than offensive production. However, one thing is certain: the Celtics star has very solid arguments.
