Qatar WTT Star Contender Summit
Korea defeats China one after another in table tennis doubles
The pair of Jang Woo-jin (31) and Cho Dae-seong (24) crossed the ‘Great Wall’ of China and reported their first win in the New Year’s World Table Tennis (WTT) series. The pair of Jang Woo-jin and Cho Dae-seong achieved a 3-2 (5-11, 11-8, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9) victory over China’s Huang Yu-jung and Wen Ruibo in the WTT Star Contender men’s doubles final held in Doha, Qatar on the 18th. The team of Jang Woo-jin and Cho Dae-seong caused an upset by defeating the Chinese team of world number 2 Lin Shidong and 7th place Liang Jingkun in the men’s singles round of 16 by a score of 3-2, and then defeated the Chinese group again in the final.
With the score tied at 9-9 in the 5th set, after a rally that lasted until 13 balls, Jang Woo-jin scored with a powerful forehand drive to take the lead by one point. It was Cho Dae-seong who put an end to the match. The long match ended when China’s Hwang Yu-jeong was unable to block Cho Dae-sung’s backhand topspin attack. It has been 3 years and 7 months since the Contender Zagreb competition in June 2022 that the combination of Woojin Jang and Daeseong Cho stood at the top of the WTT series competition.
Korean table tennis has recently been performing well against the world’s strongest team, China, in doubles. In the mixed doubles final of the WTT Hong Kong Finals in December last year, the team of Lim Jong-hoon (29) and Shin Yu-bin (22) defeated China’s Wang Chu-qin and Sun Ying-sha, ranked first in the world in men’s and women’s singles, 3-0 to win the championship.
