MATTANEWS.CO, JAMBI — The Jambi City football team successfully made history by winning the 2026 Jambi Governor’s Cup after defeating the strong Merangin team in a penalty shootout in the final match which was held at the Swarnabhumi Stadium, Pijoan, Muaro Jambi Regency, Sunday (25/1/2026) afternoon.
The top match was full of tension and even stopped temporarily due to chaos, with the score tied at 1-1 until normal time ended. After the situation was declared safe, the match finally proceeded to a penalty shootout to determine the champion.
In this decisive moment, Jambi City goalkeeper Andika Baihaqi performed brilliantly and became the hero of the victory. He managed to block the final penalty kick from Merangin player, Ahmad Wildan, number 11, while ensuring that the 2026 Jambi Governor’s Cup trophy belonged to Jambi City.
In the penalty shootout round, five Jambi City executioners carried out their duties perfectly and successfully scored goals. Meanwhile, from the Merangin camp, one kick failed to result in a goal after being pushed over by Andika Baihaqi, making the final score in the penalty shootout end 5-4 in favor of Jambi City.
The final match itself was tight from the early minutes. Both teams appeared disciplined, played openly and traded attacks. However, until the long whistle for normal time sounded, the position remained equal so the winner had to be determined through a penalty shootout.
This victory is even more special because Jambi City, which is coached by former National Team player, Saktiawan Sinaga, managed to lift the prestigious trophy and became the first team to win the Jambi Governor’s Cup at the Swarnabhumi Stadium.
This achievement was enthusiastically welcomed by the people of Jambi City and is expected to trigger the revival of regional football, as well as giving birth to outstanding young talents who are able to compete at provincial and national levels.
