The European aviation safety authority EASA is calling on airlines to avoid Iranian airspace for the time being. Caution is also advised in the airspace of neighboring countries, especially if there are US military bases there, according to a statement from EASA. The warning is a response to the tense situation in Iran. It is therefore initially valid for one month.
The EASA cites, among other things, the reason that the Iranian air defense is on heightened alert due to possible military action by the USA. The “possible use of a variety of weapons and air defense systems, combined with unpredictable state reactions and the potential activation of air defense systems,” also poses a threat to civil aviation, the statement said. USA threatens military intervention
Since mass protests against the Islamic Republic’s authoritarian system of rule began at the end of December, US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran several times with US intervention. According to media reports, the USA is currently increasing its military presence in the Middle East. The aircraft carrier “USS Abraham Lincoln” and accompanying ships are on their way from the South China Sea to the region, reported the “New York Times” and the “Axios” portal, among others.
Additional weapons and defense equipment would also be brought there, the New York Times reported. Other fighter jets could also follow. There was initially no official confirmation of the relocation from the Pentagon.
