Hummels on Criticism & Former Teammate

Brandt and the former Dortmund defense chief each moved to Borussia in 2019. Brandt came to the Black and Yellows from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of 25 million euros, while Hummels returned from FC Bayern for 30.5 million euros. They played together at the club until Hummels’ departure in 2024 and also played side by side several times in the German national team.

Brandt, who was in coach Niko Kovac’s starting line-up against Tottenham, is having a decent season – even if he is not an undisputed regular player. In recent weeks, the attacking midfielder has scored important goals in home wins in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-0) and St. Pauli (3-2). So far in 2025/26 he has eleven points scorer (nine goals, two assists) in 22 competitive games.

What will happen next for Brandt in the summer is still unclear. His contract with BVB is expiring. After there were rumors of farewell in the fall, the current trend is probably towards an extension. In any case, the club wants to keep the 29-year-old and Brandt has always expressed himself in this direction.
