Handball Euro 2024: Germany’s Semi-Final Hopes Delayed

The German handball players are against the hosts and top favorites Denmark lost 26:31 (12:13). This means that national coach Alfreð Gíslason’s team missed out on an early entry into the European Championship semi-finals.

In the game, Germany offered resistance to the Danes for a long time in the sold-out arena in Herning. The Danes initially had difficulty getting past German goalkeeper David Späth, while the Germans continued to look for shots up front. But as the game continued, the Danes finally prevailed. This was also due to the strong performance of the Danish goalkeeper Emil Nielsen.

Chance of reaching the semi-finals remains

“They are just extremely good,” said coach Gíslason on ARD about the Danes after the game. But he also praised the German defense: “A very good game from the boys.”

Captain Johannes Golla said: “It’s of course not the end of the world that we lose here against Denmark. We could have obviously looked better with a few fewer mistakes.” Now it’s all about getting the game out of your body before the game against France.

Despite the defeat against the world champions, the DHB selection still has a chance of reaching the semi-finals. A draw in the last main round game against France on Wednesday is enough. The Germans can no longer take part in the game for fifth place on Friday.
