Plan B after your career
The professions of the German handball stars
They fill the halls and want to inspire the fans at the European Handball Championships. But in addition to their careers, Germany’s handball players also focus on down-to-earth professions.
Imagine if Manuel Neuer had another job in addition to his job at FC Bayern: after training, for example, Germany’s best soccer goalkeeper would still be studying for his studies.
That’s exactly what happens in handball: The German team has Andreas Wolff, one of the best in his field, in the squad. With a rumored monthly salary of 50,000 euros at THW Kiel, Wolff is even the top earner in the DHB selection. Nevertheless, he is still studying international management on the side in order to prepare for the time after his career.
And the goalkeeper isn’t the only one going this route. There are some players who concentrate fully on their handball career. However, many players in the German squad for the European Handball Championships in Denmark, Sweden and Norway have completed training or are studying alongside sport.
This is how much German players can earn at the European Handball Championships
A plan B alongside your career makes sense in sports like handball. The national players can live more than well on their salary. But on the one hand, the dream of top-class sport can quickly end – be it due to poor performance or injuries. And on the other hand, even a top handball player doesn’t have enough after his sporting career. You shouldn’t rely on a possible career after your career in sports, for example as a coach.
The German players can earn some nice extra money at the European Handball Championships. National coach Alfred Gislason’s team will receive a total of 575,000 euros from the German Handball Association if they win a gold medal. With 18 players in the DHB squad, that’s more than 30,000 euros per player.
There is at least 50,000 euros for winning the group. Reaching the final brings in 430,000 euros. Bronze is worth 300,000 euros. Reaching the semi-finals will be worth a maximum of 190,000 euros. The bonus for 5th place is 100,000 euros.
