At the 2022 beijing Winter Olympics, American-born skier Eileen Gu, who was naturalized in China, won double gold on behalf of the Chinese team and became the focus of attention, sparking a discussion about China’s naturalized athletes.
As then, China has continued to promote the naturalization of athletes. The Chinese short track speed skaters Liu shaolin and Liu Shao’ang brothers, who represented Hungary at the Beijing Winter Olympics, and the Korean skater Lin Xiaojun have successively naturalized as Chinese citizens and have achieved outstanding results on behalf of China at the 2025 Asian Winter Games.
China’s achievements in winter sports in the past were far inferior to those in the Summer olympics, but the addition of naturalized athletes has quickly made it a strong competitor.
As the General Governance of sports of China announced the list of athletes participating in the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on January 23, these top naturalized athletes representing China may once againthrust into the spotlight。
Though, outside of winter sports, China’s policy of naturalizing athletes in traditional sports such as football and basketball has been far less effective than expected.
we took stock of the well-known naturalized athletes who have represented China in major events and thier current status.
Gu Ailing
- Project: Freestyle skiing
- Nationality of origin: United States
- Current status: Chinese national team member

As a mixed-race Chinese and American who grew up in San Francisco, Gu Ailing grew up under the American sports training system. In 2019, she decided to represent China and won two gold medals in the women’s halfpipe and big air at the 2022 Beijing winter Olympics. This undoubtedly made her the most successful case in China’s hope to improve its performance in international competitions and demonstrate “soft power” through naturalized athletes.
Though, in the context of the geopolitical game between China and the United States, her national identity has been scrutinized by the media and online public opinion. She has also caused controversy as she publicly stated that she was “an American when I was in the United States and a Chinese when I was in China.”
All parties have never confirmed that Gu Ailing has given up her american citizenship, and in her visits in recent years, she has focused more on issues such as hoping to inspire young women and Asians through her struggle. On the one hand, she demonstrates the independence and progressivism of American culture, claiming that competitive sports “transcend national borders,” and on the other hand, she also skillfully avoids issues that may touch China’s sensitive nerves.
What remains unchanged is that her current competitive performance is still excellent and she continues to be favored by sponsors. Although she missed the 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games due to injury, she came back to win the slopestyle championship at the Swiss LAAX Open just held in January – this was the only event in which she lost a gold medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
At the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, China will definitely hope that she will achieve great results again – after all, it was once reported that Beijing had allocated funds for her.Sky-high training fees。
Zhu Yi
- Project: Figure skating
- Nationality of origin: united States
- Current situation: Peking University student, missed the Milan Winter Olympics

In addition to Gu Ailing,Zhu Yi,China’s first naturalized figure skating (figure skating) athlete, will also receive attention at the 2022 Winter Olympics. However, this young athlete, who was born in California and became the U.S. Novice Champion at the age of 16, fell down one after another in the Olympic team and individual events and performed poorly. Later, rumors spread on the internet that her family background was prominent and she was suspected of being taken care of in the competition quota, which led to her encountering online violence.
After the Beijing Winter Olympics, Zhu Yi was recommended to the Department of Psychology at Peking University. At the 2025 Asian Winter Games, she represented the Chinese team and ranked fifth in individual events.

“>But their competitive results are already impressive enough: at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the two brothers won the men’s 5000-meter relay gold medal as the main force, which was Hungary’s first gold medal at the Winter olympics; four years later in Beijing, younger brother Liu Shaoang won the men’s 500-meter gold medal, which was Hungary’s first individual event gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
After the Beijing Winter Olympics, the two applied to change their nationality and successfully became Chinese citizens in 2023. According to Hungarian media reports, the important reason behind this decision was that their long-term coach and spiritual mentor Zhang Jing received an “unrejectable” offer from China to join the Chinese short track speed skating team.

in April of the same year, in the men’s 1,000-meter event of the China Short Track Speed Skating Championships, the brothers who represented the Tianjin team after naturalization won the runner-up, and liu Shao’ang broke the national record.
Liu Shaoang won the 1,000-meter bronze medal on behalf of China at the Asian Winter Games last year, and also won the 5,000-meter relay bronze medal with his brother.
The two brothers hope to represent China’s first Olympic champion, but at the milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, this goal will be shouldered by younger brother Liu Shao’ang. Because in the competition list announced by the Chinese delegation, his brother Liu Shaolin was not selected.
Lin Xiaojuan
- Project: Short track speed skating
- Nationality of origin: South Korea
- Current status: Chinese national team member

The former South Korean short track speed skating genius whose original Chinese character name is “Lin Xiaojun”, the turning point of his naturalization in China began with a “sexual harassment” incident – his former Korean teammate Huang Daxian accused Lin in 2019 of pulling off his pants during rock climbing training, causing him psychological trauma. After two trials, the South Korean court found lin not guilty in May 2021. After training nowhere in South Korea for two years, he has announced his naturalization in China and changed his name to “Lin Xiaojun”.
he rose to prominence at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics by winning the men’s 1,000-meter medal on behalf of the Korean team. In the years after being selected for the South Korean team, he won 6 gold medals and 2 silver medals for South Korea at three World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, and 1 gold medal and 1 bronze medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Due to Olympic Committee regulations, unless the country of origin agrees, athletes must compete for the country of naturalization for three years before they can participate in the Olympics after naturalization.Lin Xiaojuan, who was naturalized in 2021, was unable to represent China in the Beijing winter Olympics. Though, he has currently won 4 gold medals and 1 silver for the Chinese team at the World Championships, and won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze at the Asian Winter Games last year. Representing China and South Korea combined, Lin Xiaojun is already a Grand Slam athlete at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships – winning gold medals in the 500, 1000, 1500, super 3000, and 5000-meter relay.
He has maintained good competitive status in the four years sence he was naturalized in China. When he was interviewed by Chinese media in 2024, he stated that he was “already Chinese” and was proud of it, which caused dissatisfaction among Korean netizens. In January 2026, he was officially selected for the Chinese team’s Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics roster. This will be his first time representing China in the Winter Olympics.
Kyle Lee

- Nationality of origin: united States
- Current situation: “Still Chinese”

In 2023, NBA Minnesota Timberwolves (Timberwolves) player Kyle Forman Anderson announced in a video on sina Weibo that he woudl become a Chinese national and change his Chinese name to “Li Kai”. He said: “It is my pride and honor to wear the Chinese team jersey.”
His maternal great-grandfather Li Chongxin left his hometown in Guangdong and immigrated to Jamaica in the 1920s. Kyle Li,who was born in New York,is one-eighth of Chinese descent. When the Chinese Basketball Association announced that he would represent the Chinese team in the Men’s Basketball World Cup,chinese state media reported that he had returned to Shenzhen in 2018 to trace his roots. His and his mother’s names were added to the family tree, and that when the opportunity came,it took him “about a week” to decide to become a Chinese citizen.

As the first naturalized national player in the history of Chinese basketball, Li Kai, who wears the No. 1 jersey in the Chinese team, has followed the Chinese men’s basketball team into a trough. The team ranked fourth from the bottom in the World Cup with one win and four losses, exited early and failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics. At that time, Li Kai said that this World Cup was “just the beginning, not the end”, but he has not played on behalf of China since then.
Before christmas last year, there were media reports that Kyle Lee, currently playing for the Utah Jazz, had changed his nationality back to the United states according to official NBA information. However, both he and his agency issued a statement clarifying that the news was untrue, and said that they did not rule out continuing to play for the Chinese team in the future.
Li Ke, Jiang Guangtai
- Project: Football
- Nationality of origin: British
- Current status: chinese nationality

In 2019, Chinese football, which is still in the era of “Jinyuan Football”, started a new attempt. For the first time in history, it introduced players to the men’s football national team through naturalization. The first person to be naturalized and recruited by the Chinese team was Li Ke (originally named Nico Yennaris) who was born in London. this midfielder from Beijing guoan, who once represented the England youth team and whose mother is of Chinese descent, said at the time that he had had the idea of representing the Chinese national team in his youth because judging from his career, it was “almost impractical” to represent the England adult team.
Jiang Guangtai (tyias Browning), who was also born in the UK and is of Chinese descent, became a Chinese citizen later in the same year. Previously, this defender from the Everton (Everton) youth training echelon of the Premier League had joined the then Chinese super League giant Guangzhou Evergrande.
when the two became members of the Chinese team, the Chinese men’s football team was hoping to achieve short-term results through naturalized players to help Xi Jinping’s reform goal of becoming a football powerhouse. However, shortly afterwards, major events such as the COVID-19 epidemic, the Evergrande explosion, and another round of large-scale anti-corruption storms in Chinese football once again brought Chinese football to “zero” and entered a trough.
Li Ke and Jiang Guangtai have played 12 and 35 times for the Chinese team so far respectively. Jiang Guangtai has achieved good results in the two championships in his Chinese Super League career. He still often serves as the main central defender of the national team when not injured. With the Chinese Football Association and the national team undergoing a major reshuffle, the two players currently playing for Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai Haigang are also the two naturalized players who are most likely to continue to be recruited by the Chinese team in the future.
Exon, Alan, Luo Guofu, Goulart
- Project: Football
- Nationality of origin: Brazil
- Current status: Retired or returning to his place of origin

Li Ke and Jiang Guangtai are not the only naturalized football players in China in recent years. In 2019-2020 alone, there were as many as 10 well-known professional players who were naturalized as Chinese nationals, including four former Brazilian strikers who played for the Chinese Super League, including Elkeson.
Unlike li and Jiang, although players such as Exxon, Alan, Ricardo Goulart, and aloísio dos Santos Gonçalves are also witnesses and representatives of the “Golden Yuan” era of the Chinese Super League, they do not have Chinese ancestry and were naturalized on the grounds of long-term residence in China.
Only three of these four have ever played on behalf of the Chinese national team. Among them, exxon has played 19 games as a Chinese national team in 5 years and scored 4 goals, while Alan and Luo Guofu have played 4 and 5 times respectively.
Goulart, who announced his naturalization in 2020, was not eligible to participate in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers as he had been loaned back to play in the Brazilian League and had not yet completed his residence period in China. Later, in 2022, he announced that he would give up his Chinese citizenship, resume his Brazilian citizenship, and return to play in the Brazilian League. He later announced his retirement in 2023.
When Goulart announced his retirement, Chinese media reported that Guangzhou Evergrande invested a total of 800 million yuan in salary and various operating expenses to attract his naturalization. However, he never played a minute on behalf of the Chinese team and was called “the most failed naturalization.”
fernando, Serginho

- Nationality of origin: Brazil
- Current status: Chinese nationality, playing in the Chinese Super League

Fernando Henrique da Conceição was naturalized in China in 2019 and entered the Chinese national team training list at the same time as Jiang Guangtai, but he did not make his first national team appearance until 2024.
He and Sérgio Antônio Soler de Oliveira Júnior, who will only be naturalized in 2025, were both Chinese team players in last year’s World Cup Asian qualifiers, playing 7 and 3 times respectively. Fernando scored the only goal for the Chinese team so far in the game against Singapore.
Serginho currently plays for the Chinese Super League team Beijing Guoan, while Fernando has moved to several Chinese clubs in the past few years. After leaving the team from Shandong Taishan in 2025, he did not receive a professional contract and is now a free agent. The two still retain chinese nationality and can theoretically still compete on behalf of the Chinese national team.
