Island with an area of about 84 km2 is home to approximately three thousand stray cats. Syros Cats Organization has taken care of their capture and castration since the 1990s, but also provides them with other necessary care. In the past weeks, she also asked for volunteers who would help with the mentioned activities, she informs server Daily Mail.
Syros Cats enticed interested parties with free accommodation and food. In exchange for this, volunteers will work five days a week, five hours a day, including feeding cats, cleaning toilets, but also catching strays or taking them to the vet for vaccinations.
“We are looking for volunteers, individuals or couples who are fit, mature, healthy and independent and would like to come to us for at least a month to help with all aspects of caring for the cats,” said the organization, whose website, however, currently states that it has had to suspend registration of new applications due to the enormous interest.
Maybe it will come out next time
Both people with veterinary experience and those who simply have a weakness for cats were given the chance. “Now we face the tricky task of choosing the most suitable ones from all those applications. Be patient with us,” the organization commented on the situation, adding that other interested parties should keep a close eye on social networks so as not to miss the next round of applications.
“Usually we have about four volunteers at any one time, often from different walks of life and corners of the world. So they need to be tolerant and accepting of the different customs, races, genders and faiths they will encounter in Greece,” the organization added.
