The Green Bay Packers have reportedly reached an agreement with former Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon to become their defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN on Sunday.
Gannon will replace Jeff Hafley, who last week became head coach of the Miami Dolphins after leading the Packers’ defense for two seasons
In Green Bay, Gannon will take the reins of a defense that includes first-team All-Pro starter Micah Parsons and second-team All-Pro linebacker Xavier McKinney. He will become the fourth defensive coordinator in eight seasons under coach Matt LaFleur in Green Bay.
Hafley’s two successful years followed the departure of two coordinators, Mike Pettine and Joe Barry.
Gannon was fired by the Cardinals after going 3-14 this season and 15-36 in three seasons as Arizona’s coach. A source told ESPN that LaFleur “liked the fact that Gannon took the head coaching job.”
A source also said that Gannon was attracting interest from Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh for their respective defensive coordinator positions with the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants, and that if the Packers had waited longer, they could have lost Gannon.
