Last summer, FC Bayern Munich strengthened itself intelligently. A very important building block has been added, especially in central defense.
Munich – A year late, Jonathan Tah and FC Bayern Munich came together last summer. The 29-year-old’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen had expired, the German record champions snapped up and secured him on a free transfer. It was a transfer coup that hardly anyone talks about.
The fact that Munich only conceded 23 goals in 24 games in all competitions is also closely linked to the qualities of the 43-time national player. Tah recently revealed in the evening newspaper Munich: “Vincent Kompany was a decisive factor in my move because he convinced me and I felt that I could grow and get better under him.”
Jonathan Tah is an important player at FC Bayern
The term “leadership” came up as the conversation continued. Tah walks on and off the pitch. According to Sky, he is part of the FC Bayern team council. He always speaks in a calm voice on the microphone, but his words still have weight. After the 3-1 win at the start of the Champions League season against Chelsea FC, he said: “There’s a lot of talk around it. From what I noticed, it was sometimes a bit disrespectful. We talk on the pitch.”

Tah follows his words with actions. His pass rate of 96 percent is impressive – and they are by no means just safety balls. He forms a bulwark together with Dayot Upamecano. The two defenders complement each other well. Upamecano is the slightly faster, more aggressively attacking defender. Tah is no less greedy in duels, but is a little more strategic.
“The duo for the Champions League title?” The blog “miasanrot” asked this question. It would be the crowning achievement for Tah, who won the double with Bayer in 2024. Will he collect more trophies in 2026? Bundesliga, DFB Cup, premier class – and the World Cup in the summer. He wants to achieve the maximum with the DFB team and FC Bayern.
It is this desire to win that has brought him so far. Tah was a key figure under coach Xabi Alonso and part of the “Invincibles”. His coach enthused after his departure: “I had a lot of great moments with Jona, a lot of great conversations. Because Jona is a great person. He’s certainly a great player, but he’s also a great person.” In any case, FC Bayern benefited from precisely these characteristics in the first half of the year.
