Filip Gravenfors, who was selected in the first Olympic selection by the SOC last spring and was one of Sweden’s great medal hopes, is injured and will miss the Olympics. The injury came during a training camp in Finnish Ruka.
It was during the Olympic team’s precamp in Finnish Ruka that the accident occurred. The conditions for training were good and the Swedish team had its first day of training.
– First training day at the camp. I was going for one last ride and did a backfull on the upper jump. I landed with a bit of forward weight and fell forward into a hump. Out of reflex, I reached out with my arm and felt a pop in my shoulder. I immediately understood that it was over, says Filip.
Filip was examined on the spot by a doctor and the decision was made to fly home to Sweden, where he had to meet with a doctor linked to the national team and SOK for a thorough examination and X-ray. There, a total clavicle fracture was found, which definitely puts an end to Filip’s participation in the Olympics.
– It all went very quickly, from going to precamp and preparing for your first Olympics to sitting with your arm in your arms and a broken collarbone. It feels very heavy, the Olympics is something that I have worked for and had my sights on throughout my life, and especially in the last year, it has been my only focus. The dream scenario that you can paint, what will happen during and after the Olympics just disappears and that opportunity is now taken away from me, says Filip.
– I have very good people around me with my family, friends, teammates and coaches who both help me practically and support me, Filip continues.
Now surgery and rehab await the determined Filip to get the best possible recovery to get back to the World Cup and the world elite.
– Now it’s just a matter of aiming forward. The injury itself isn’t really a problem, it’s the timing that’s so bad. Now I will first rest a few days before surgery and then start my rehab. We’ll see if I can get back and do some racing this season. Now I just try to find the positive in my everyday life and I’m glad that the injury is not more serious than it is. I will go to the Olympics in the future, now it’s just a matter of keeping my head high and doing what makes me feel good, concludes Filip.
The humpback Olympics begin next week, but unfortunately Filip is not there.
