FIFA Women’s Champions Cup: London Hosts Stars

London officially became the epicenter of world women’s football with the arrival of the continental champion clubs to the English capital to compete in the final phase of the inaugural edition of the FIFA™ Women’s Champions Cup.

On Monday, January 26, players from three of the participating teams toured London aboard iconic black taxis, now electric, decorated for the occasion with the colors and emblems of their clubs. The initiative brought the international figures closer to the local fans, and offered the footballers the opportunity to see some of the city’s most famous tourist attractions along the way as the capital prepares to crown the first women’s club intercontinental champion. The four semi-finalists will compete for the record $2.3 million tournament prize poolwhich FIFA established and announced last week.

Gotham FC (Concacaf), SC Corinthians (CONMEBOL), Arsenal Women FC (UEFA) and ASFAR (CAF) will face each other in four unmissable matches: two semi-finals, the duel for third place and the final. One of them will make history as the first winner of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup. Brentford’s stadium will host the two semi-finals on Wednesday, January 28, while Arsenal’s stadium will host the third-place clash and the final on February 1.

The finalist teams were represented on the iconic taxi ride by Gotham FC defender Lilly Reale, Arsenal Women FC forward Olivia Smith and SC Corinthians captain Gabi Zanotti. Finally, ASFAR, champion of Africa, landed in London on Monday night.

The players were accompanied during the tour by soccer legends Jill Scott and Ian Wright, as well as the imposing trophy of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup™thus kicking off a decisive week for women’s football worldwide.

“The Women’s Champions Cup represents a new era for women’s club football, bringing together champions from around the world and creating unforgettable moments for fans and players alike,” said former England international Scott. “I’m looking forward to seeing what this tournament does.”

London has established itself as a global focus for women’s football. This week, and for the first time in history, continental champion clubs from around the world will compete on English soil.
