For Eli Iserbyt, the past year was marked by medical setbacks and an unexpected end to his career. Yet he is now taking a new step in cyclo-cross, albeit in a different role.
Forced farewell to Eli Iserbyt
The West Flemish had been struggling with physical problems for a long time, which increasingly affected his performance. After examination, it turned out that a narrowing of the femoral artery was the cause of his persistent complaints. Several interventions followed, but the desired recovery failed to materialize. The impact on his training work and competition rhythm became too great to function at top level.
Iserbyt then announced that a return to the elite category was no longer feasible. His decision to quit came after consultation with medical specialists and his entourage. The conclusion was clear: top sport was no longer a realistic option. He expressed his farewell soberly, without drama, but with visible resignation.
New role at the World Cup
Despite the abrupt end to his sporting career, Iserbyt remains closely involved in cyclo-cross. This weekend he will appear on television for the first time as an analyst during the World Cup in Hulst. It will also be the first match that he attends live since his decision to quit.
“The question came from the VRT and I responded with pleasure,” he tells Het Belang van Limburg. This invitation offers him the opportunity to use his experience in another position within the sport. “I will participate in the analysis of the men’s matches.”
Although he is now taking a first step towards a media career, he consciously keeps his further plans open. During previous conversations he indicated that he is not yet making final choices. He indicates that life is being reshaped little by little. This change takes time, but at the same time offers space to explore new possibilities.
