The fact that it is twelve degrees below zero in Duved when Saturday’s ski school starts does not worry the participants.
– It’s great fun, says 11-year-old Solin Kamal and is joined by 10-year-old Sara Homad Wali.
Soon they and everyone else are out on the hill and riding.
For many children in Jämtland County, skiing is a matter of course. They have parents who ski themselves, they get a ride and have equipment. But there are also those who do not have that opportunity.
– There can be various reasons, but a lot of it is about the parents not being able to ski. So the children haven’t had the opportunity to learn either, says Cajsa Hjortlinger, who sits on the board of Duveds IF.
Also invites parents
Last year, the association therefore decided to start an inclusive ski school. The goal was to attract children who did not have the opportunity to learn to ski. The focus was on alpine skiing and a total of 19 children participated.
This winter, the concept has been developed. In addition to an alpine ski school, cross-country skiing is also offered. In addition, it was decided to also invite parents.
This year, 38 children and around 20 parents are participating. Most come from Duved, but many also come from Mörsil and Järpen.
The goal is more in ordinary operations
The association’s goal is for everyone to feel that they can hang on the slopes. In addition to that, it is also about giving the children enough prior knowledge that they can then participate in the association’s regular activities if they wish.
– Duveds IF has alpine training, but there you need to have prior knowledge to start. If you don’t have that, you have to have a parent with you, but these children haven’t had a parent who can accompany them. That’s where we saw a huge gap that we needed to fill, says Cajsa Hjortlinger.
Thanks to project funds and cooperation from the business community, the association can offer free equipment, lift passes and ski instructors. In addition to that, the association’s members volunteer and help on the slopes. The only requirement is that you resolve membership in Duveds IF.
