Djokovic Exits PTPA: What You Need to Know

Novak Djokovic is taking a strange step. He withdraws from the players’ union he founded himself.

The players’ union Professional Tennis Player Association (PTPA) is losing its most prominent member. Co-founder Novak Djokovic announced on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the association founded in 2020. The Serbian Grand Slam record winner cited “concerns about transparency and leadership” within the organization as the reason.

Djokovic founded the PTPA together with the Canadian Vasek Pospisil. The players’ union took legal action against the tennis associations in March 2025, denouncing “anti-competitive restrictions and abusive practices”. The lawsuit also addressed the “unsustainable schedule,” which schedules tournaments in eleven out of twelve months of a year.

“I am proud of the vision that Vasek and I shared when founding the PTPA: to give the players a stronger, independent voice,” Djokovic said on social media: “But it has become clear that my values and approach no longer match the current direction of the organization.”

From now on, he will “continue to focus on my tennis game, my family and on promoting the sport in a way that corresponds to my principles and integrity,” said the 38-year-old.
