The 38-year-old Djokovic will be participating in the tournament for the 21st time in four consecutive years. He has won the last 10 times. At this tournament, he is aiming to win his 25th Grand Slam tournament, the most ever for a man or woman, and to become the oldest men’s singles champion since the opening of the Grand Slam tournament.
Djokovic defeated world No. 71 P. Martinez (Spain) in straight sets in the first round, achieving his 100th match win, approaching Roger Federer (Switzerland)’s total of 102 Australian Open match wins.
In the second round, he made four aces and won points with a high probability of 89% when he received a first serve. Maestri took the lead without giving him a single break chance, and was broken in the first game early in the second set. Without losing momentum, the set count was 2-0 and he was on his way to victory.
Djokovic continued to dominate in the third set, breaking first in the third game to seal the deal. It was a comfortable victory in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Djokovic, who has won a total of 101 Australian Open matches and is one win short of Federer’s record, will face either world No. 75 B. van de Zansfulp (Netherlands) or No. 318 Xiang Junchen (China) in the third round.
On the same day, 5th seed L. Musetti (Italy), 8th seed B. Shelton (USA), 15th seed K. Khachanov, and 16th seed J. Mencik (Czech Republic) advanced to the third round.
