After 70 years: Olympic flame back in Cortina
The flame has arrived in the first of the two host cities for this year’s Winter Games. It’s still a week and a half until Milan.
A week and a half before the start of the Winter Olympics, the Olympic flame has arrived in Cortina d’Ampezzo, one of the two official host cities. The torch arrived back in Cortina exactly 70 years to the day after the start of the first Winter Games. The 6,000-inhabitant community in the Italian Alps was already the venue in 1956. This year it is the place’s turn again, together with Milan.
The torch is expected in the northern Italian city on February 5th, one day before the official start of this year’s games. She has been on the road since November. After starting in the ancient site of Olympia on the Greek Peloponnese peninsula, we first went through Greece. She has been on tour through Italy since December.
Around 820 athletes took part in the 1956 Winter Games – the first in Italy. This time there will be more than 3,500. The games last until February 22nd. The competitions will not only be held in Milan and Cortina, but will also be spread across several locations in the north of the country. The closing ceremony will be in the Verona Arena.
