Corsica Funeral Shooting: Mother of Nationalist Killed

BarcelonaFormer Corsican nationalist leader Alain Orsoni, a key figure in the independence movement in the 1980s, died this Monday after being shot during his mother’s funeral in the south of Corsica. The authorities of the French island have opened an investigation into the events, which are attributed to a sniper who fled after the murder, which took place in the early afternoon in the town of Vero. At the moment there are no clues about the reason for the attack.

Orsoni, who was 71, was part of the leadership of the Cors National Liberation Front (FLNC) in the 1980s, before founding and leading the Movement for Self-Determination (MPA). His brother Guy was murdered in 1983 and his son, who had the same name as his uncle, was an organized crime figure on the island.

In the 1990s, he left Corsica for several years, undermined by internal struggles within the independence movement, which led him to undertake several gambling-related businesses in Florida, Nicaragua and Spain. He returned there in 2008, the year in which the police dismantled a plot to assassinate him. On the Mediterranean island he was also known for having presided over the Ajaccio football club between 2008 and 2015.
