Cordova Tragedy: Sanchez Declares Grief & Vows Investigation

MadridThis Monday there was supposed to be a relevant photograph from a political point of view, the meeting between the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, and the leader of the PP, Alberto Nuñez Feijóo, after almost a year without meeting, but last night both decided to suspend their agendas due to the railway tragedy in Adamuz (Andalusia). Following the large number of victims and the seriousness of the accident, the head of the Spanish executive traveled this morning to ground zero of the events to have first-hand information and after more than three hours on the ground he appeared before the media to announce three days of official mourning and make it clear that this Monday is “a day of pain for all of Spain”. The leader of the PP, Alberto Nuñez Feijóo, has also traveled to the scene.

In an appearance without questions, the Spanish president did not go into assessing the possible causes of the accident, since for now the Ministry of Transport admits that it does not know the causes – “It’s strange”, Minister Óscar Puente already said yesterday on Sunday. In this sense, Sánchez has guaranteed that he would get to the end to discover what happened and that he would share it with public opinion: “We will discover the truth. When the cause is known, with absolute transparency, we will make it known to the citizens,” he said.

Minutes before and through X, Puente said the following: “We have been able to verify the seriousness of what has happened and the terrible consequences. But we do not know, and no one knows at this moment, the causes. It will be the Railway Accident Investigation Commission that will determine it […]. Caution in analyzes based on speculation”.

At this point, Pedro Sánchez has taken the opportunity to ask citizens to inform themselves through the media and official channels, avoiding the “disinformation” that appears in times of crisis. The Spanish president has appeared accompanied by the president of the Junta d’Andalusia, Juanma Moreno Bonilla (PP), and has prescribed “unity” to respond to the crisis and also coordination between administrations, in addition to thanking all the public servants who have been working in the area since last night to save the wounded and identify the victims. From his government, he was accompanied by Minister Puente, the head of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and also the Minister of Finance and future candidate of the PSOE in Andalusia, María Jesús Montero.
