Club Brugge Trainer: Who is the Coach?

During the winter internship, Ivan Leko showed his passion at Club Brugge’s training sessions. A number of FC Groningen players marveled at the way Leko led Club Brugge’s training sessions. Then Leko also showed that same passion while answering some questions.

A number of players from FC Groningen saw Leko working at Club Brugge in the Banús Football Center on a winter internship. Leko threw out a number of battle cries at Blauw-Zwart. “Is he the head coach, no?”, quotes The Latest News the pawns from the Netherlands.

Leko then started the conversation and indicated that he still trains with passion at Club Brugge. Leko was asked whether he had suffered from voice problems due to his fanatical way of coaching.

“I had it once, but it wasn’t because of the training. I had a viral infection and couldn’t talk. (breed) I couldn’t say a word for three days. Then you stand there gesticulating, but you can’t do anything. Very, very painful for me (laughs). It was at Standard, we played at Mechelen I think. My assistants were good. But for me it was hell,” said Leko.

Leko is then told that the terms fire, grinta and passion are always associated with him as head coach. “Look, it’s my way of coaching. Everyone has their character. This is who I am. That was the case ten years ago and it will still be the case in twenty years,” Leko says about his way of training at Club Brugge.

“Only: if you want to stay at the highest level in football, shouting and screaming is not enough. Players are smart. Staff members are too. There are fifty people walking around here. Especially in football, knowledge is the key. If you don’t have that, then after three weeks they say: ‘He’s not real’,” concludes the Club Brugge coach.
