Chile Friendly: Racing Match Suspended – Fires

The forest fire in the Concepción region raises alerts throughout the southwest of Santiago and forced the authorities to suspend the scheduled friendly between Racing and Universidad de Chile, who were going to face each other this Sunday at the Municipal Stadium of Concepción.

The coastal city in the south of the neighboring country is affected by a series of fires, which caused red alerts to be triggered due to the impossibility of stopping the various outbreaks that are causing havoc throughout the region. A more than worrying situation that also gained relevance in the world of sports, since the Academy game was scheduled in that city.

According to the Government of Chile, there are 24 outbreaks of forest fires in the central-southern area of the country. Luis Cordero, Minister of Security, reported that there are 16 deaths (one in the Ñuble region and 15 in Biobío). In total, there are approximately 9000 hectares affected.

Given this situation, finally this Sunday morning the game was officially suspended. “We inform that the friendly match that Racing was supposed to play today against the University of Chile in Concepción was suspended due to the declaration of catastrophe due to the forest fires that affect a large part of the area,” they expressed from the Avellaneda club.

“We regret what happened and we appreciate your understanding; at the same time we send our solidarity to the population affected by this emergency. The team will return to Buenos Aires to resume its usual activity,” they added from the Academy.

On the other hand, this match does not have a possible rescheduling date given that Racing is close to its debut in the Apertura Tournament. Now, Gustavo Costas’ team will return to the country and focus on its first official presentation of 2026: it will visit Gimnasia de La Plata, in El Bosque, on Saturday, January 24.
