Less than six months before the World Cup in the United States, this striker could join a European club, dear to Didier Deschamps.
Six months before the World Cup, or almost, the world of internationals is divided into two categories. Those who are happy in their club, and have no reason to change. And those who are tempted to look elsewhere, to find playing time, or take a step forward.
Jean-Philippe Mateta belongs more or less to both categories. The former Lyonnais has flourished at Crystal Palace, where he has established himself as a sure bet in the Premier League, with 8 goals to his name since the start of the championship. But he has caught the eye of more upscale clubs, and is thus thinking about his future.
Announced in the sights of Manchester United, which looks for a new striker every six months, Mateta also appeals to Juventus. And the Old Lady would like to complete the deal this January, because Dusan Vlahovic is injured, and the summer recruits (Loïs Openda and Jonathan David) are slow to convince.
Mateta at Juve, what would that mean?
Fabrizio Romano took stock of the matter. Juventus can only offer a loan with an obligation to purchase, but it is still necessary to find an amount that can suit Crystal Palace. The player would like to join the Bianconeri, and his entourage has made good progress in discussions with the club.
What impact could this transfer have for Mateta as the World Cup approaches? Thanks to his good performances with Crystal Palace, he was able to celebrate his first three caps with the Blues in October-November, even scoring two goals. A few good months at Juventus, in a club dear to Didier Deschamps, would make him score big points in his competition with Hugo Ekitike, Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani. On the other hand, a difficult adaptation in Italy could cost him his place at the World Cup.
