“We could accept all of this in the first year of projectnot the fourth”: this time, the camel’s back broke for Chelsea supporters. Despite winning the Club World Cup this summer and a good start to the league season, the Blues find themselves once again in a period of crisis and sporting uncertainty, marked by the dismissal of Enzo Maresca on January 1st.
A fourth coach dismissed in less than four years by the Blues since the arrival at the head of the club of Todd Boehly, replacing Roman Abramovitch. A change of shareholder which marked the start of an extremely unstable and expensive project, with recruitments galore which were not necessarily followed by sporting effects.
This is too much for a collective of Chelsea supporters, who are calling in a press release published this Friday, January 2, for a “peaceful demonstration” on January 17, the date of the match between Chelsea and Brentford at Stamford Bridge.
“This is a moment that requires unity, clarity and action from a community of fans who have already been able to unite in the past, in particular to stop the Super League project,” the press release wrote. The supporters behind the movement “feel more and more disconnected from the management of (their) club. This event is about our model and the sports structure led by Behdad Eghbali (president of Clearlake Capital, one of the funds which is part of BlueCo, the consortium that owns the club, also RC Strasbourg). »
“Quantity was preferred to quality”
“Sporting management has FAILED to meet the standards of a club with the size, ambition and history of Chelsea,” they write. They denounce “record spending” accompanied by “minimal progress”, “team instability”, “managerial chaos” and, overall, a “failed strategy”. “Quantity was preferred to quality to increase the resale value of players: Chelsea are not Brighton or Red Bull.”
Supporters denounce in particular the ousting of Enzo Maresca. “Despite the spending, Chelsea are no closer to challenging for the English league title, automatic qualification for the Champions League is less and less likely, and qualifications for next year’s competitions have been jeopardized by a new managerial change, due to the inability of the sports management not to interfere in the choices of the head coach. »
This group of supporters, who present themselves as fans from all walks of life who go to matches or follow the club online, publish a series of clear demands to clean up the club and its policies. “This is a crucial moment in the history of our club,” we read. Chelsea is not a development project, not a purchase-resale platform. We want better. »
