Liam Rosenior presented himself with ambition at Chelsea, saying he wants to follow Sir Alex Ferguson’s example in leading a young squad towards success. The new coach of blues believes that the current group has the potential to grow, like the famous Class of 92 do Manchester United.
“I remember Sir Alex Ferguson being brave enough to throw six or seven players between the ages of 19 and 21 into a championship team because he believed in them. They grew up and won trophy after trophy. It was an incredible period in the club’s history. Without this courage, none of this would have happened. There is potential for this to happen again here,” said Rosenior, remembering names like Ryan Giggs, David Beckham or Paul Scholes. For the English coach, there is no shortage of examples in the current squad: «We are talking about Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Cole Palmer or Reece James: world-class players and still very, very young. That is this club’s ultimate ambition: to create that again.”
The 41-year-old coach, who replaced Enzo Maresca in the role, appeared aligned with the management structure and confident in the club’s model. «I have a very good professional relationship with these people. I know what they want, where they want to get to and how they want to get there. This helps me deliver what they want. That’s why I’m here. I believe we can be successful», he guaranteed, stressing: «The project is to win. It’s about winning games and winning trophies for Chelsea.”
Asked about his less media profile compared to predecessors such as Mourinho, Ancelotti or Tuchel, Rosenior responded with an inspiring quote from the Portuguese. «Everyone starts somewhere. There’s a great quote from Mourinho, one of my heroes: he said it took 20 years to become an overnight success. It’s the same for anyone. You’re not a name until you become a name.”
«Being a coach is not just systems and tactics – that’s 10% of the job. The essential thing is to create spirit, energy and culture», he concluded.
