Former Spain coach Roberto Moreno finds himself at the center of a major controversy following accusations of having used ChatGPT during his time as coach of Sochi, in Russia. It is alleged that it used artificial intelligence both in training and preparing for games, and in choosing new reinforcements.
Andrey Orlov, former general director of the Russian club, revealed in an interview that Moreno actively used AI in his daily work. According to the director, although the coach and his technical team initially presented themselves as great professionals, the strategy to get the team out of the crisis included the use of artificial intelligence.
Before a championship game, Moreno will have developed a team preparation plan together with chatGPT. According to the tool’s recommendations, Sochi players should remain awake for 28 hours. “I asked him: ‘Robert, everything is fine, but when are the players going to sleep?’”, says Orlov. Moreno corrected the parameters in the system and the suggestion immediately changed. «In the end, we applied the program generated by ChatGPT», he adds.
It is alleged that ChatGPT also intervened in the club’s transfers. One example is Kazakh Artur Shushenachev, recommended by the tool, whose performance, however, did not live up to expectations.
«I will not enter into disputes with people from the past»
In an official position, Moreno categorically denies the accusations: «I have never used ChatGPT to prepare games, define lineups or select players. Like any professional technical team, we use analytical tools to organize information, but sporting and human decisions always depend on the coach and his team”, explained the Spaniard, addressing Shushenachev’s controversial transfer.
«His hiring was a club process, led by the sporting director and approved by the coach from a technical-sporting point of view. Furthermore, he scored a goal in the Cup and suffered an injury that affected his performance, as happens in any team. From Sochi, I will remember the work done and the lessons learned. I will not enter into controversies with people from the past», added Moreno, not wanting to dwell on the topic.
