Technology has come into our lives to solve many things for us, but in no case, to save us the work that must be done to achieve … successes. Without effort and dedication nothing is achieved. There are no shortcuts that work. And this is how a former Spanish coach has learned it, in the hardest way possible. We are talking about Robert Moreno, whose time as a coach in Russia has recently ended due to a controversy related to ChatGPT.
The Catalan coach emerged in the world of football as Luis Enrique’s assistant, both in the Barça reserve team and in Roma and Celta. Later he also accompanied ‘Lucho’ on the bench of the first culé team, following the Asturian coach to the Spanish team in 2018. It was at that time where Moreno’s name came to the fore, since after the temporary resignation of Luis Enrique for personal reasons, the then second took the position of interim coach, assuming the absolute direction. He coached a total of ten games as a coach. However, Luis Enrique returned to the national team and decided not to count on Moreno anymore, whom he considered a disloyal person who had betrayed him.
«I’m going to put myself in the other point of view: I understand that he is excited, that it is the opportunity of his life, he has worked hard and is ambitious, which is a quality to value, but for me it is disloyal, I wouldn’t do it and I don’t want anyone with those characteristics on my staff. “Excessive ambition is not a virtue, but a great defect,” said Luis Enrique about a Moreno who undertook a career as a solo coach, starting with Monaco in Ligue 1 in 2019. He lasted thirteen games until he was fired. From there he went to Granada, where he coached the first 27 days, also being fired from a team that ended up relegated.
After an impasse of a couple of years without working, Moreno took over as coach of the Russian FK Sochi in December 2023. In just over two years he had time to be relegated from the Russian first division, promoted again, and be fired in September 2025, after being bottom after seven games played. But the news broke in Russia when Andrei Orlov, former general director of Sochi, accused Moreno of using artificial intelligence to choose lineups, try to get substitutions right, or use extravagant practices such as waking up players at dawn.
But the most bizarre thing is one of Orlov’s confessions, in which he claims that Moreno kept his players awake without sleeping for more than 28 hours, since ChatGPT had recommended that it was a good way to keep them active before a match. «I asked him: Robert, everything is great, but when will the boys sleep? For Moreno, ChatGPT became one of the main work tools,” Orlov said in an interview with a Russian media. And it doesn’t end there. Former coach Moreno would have gone to ChatGPT to find a striker on the market. The Kazakh Artur Shushenachev was signed and it did not go well.
