Champions League Results: Barcelona, Bayern & Kane – Updates

The players of Bayern Munich won Wednesday’s match of the 7th round of the main stage of the Champions League over the Belgian Union Royale Saint-Gilloise 2:0 and, as the second team after the London Arsenal, secured direct progress to the round of 16.

Slavia Prague lost at home to FC Barcelona 2:4 and definitively lost the chance to participate in the elimination phase.

Slovakian winger Ivan Schranz started for the Czech champion from the 65th minute, his compatriot Erik Prekop watched the duel from the substitutes’ bench.

Slavia started against Barcelona without respect. She survived Fermin Lopez’s opening chance unscathed and took the lead in the 10th minute when Michal Sadílek’s corner kick was extended to the back post by Tomáš Holeš and Vasil Kušej pushed the ball into the goal.

It took the favorite a while to shake off the quick blow, but he gradually got up to speed.

In the 34th minute, Frenkie de Jong pushed out Lopez, who beat goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk – 1:1.

The same player seven minutes later sent the Spanish giant into the lead with a precise shot from outside the penalty area.

“Stitched” managed to react before the break, this time Štěpán Chaloupek extended the ball to the front post and it bounced into the net from Robert Lewandowski – 2:2.

Barcelona turned on higher gears in the second act. De Jong’s shot was not yet awarded due to close offside, but in the 64th minute substitute Dani Olmo scored the third goal for the “Blaugranas” with an elusive shot.

Lewandowski secured the victory for the guests after Marcus Rashford’s action from close range. Thus, Slavia did not add any more to the three points obtained so far, and before the final round of the league phase, it is clear that they will not make it to the qualifying round of 24.

“Barca” jumped to ninth place in the table.

Bayern saved Kane

After a goalless first half, Bayern broke the resistance of Union Royale Saint-Gilloise shortly after the break, when English gunner Harry Kane scored twice in quick succession.

The reigning German champion played without the suspended Kim Min-Jae from the 63rd minute, but the victory was already secured.

With 18 points, it is in second place in the table, three points behind the leader Arsenal (21 points) and already has a place in the last eight, as it has five points to spare before the final round in ninth position.

Three more English clubs joined Arsenal in the top eight. Chelsea beat Cypriot Pafos 1-0 with Moises Caicedo’s goal in the 78th minute and jumped to eighth place with 13 points.

Seventh is thanks to the better score of Newcastle United, who beat PSV Eindhoven 3:0. Liverpool rose to fourth place (15 points), which won 3:0 at Marseille.

Liverpool also with Salah

Against Olympique, he also started with the Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah, who after a turbulent period at the club and returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, rejoined the training process at LFC.

In Marseille, he got a chance in the starting line-up. The reigning English champion had the upper hand from the beginning, in the 25th minute Hugo Ekitike’s goal was ruled out for offside, but at the end of the first half, Dominik Szoboszlai had already sent the guests into the lead, with a “fox” shot from a direct kick under the wall.

After changing sides, LFC highlighted his victory even more. In the 73rd minute, Jeremie Frimpong beat Geronimo Rulli, and they finally scored an own goal against the Marseille goalkeeper. Cody Gakpo sealed the victory in extra time.

A former DAC player made his mark

Juventus beat Benfica 2-0 thanks to strikes from Khephren Thuram and Weston McKennie to record their third straight win. Thanks to her, he moved to 15th place.

Another Italian Serie A representative, Atalanta Bergamo, could secure a place in the top eight if they beat Bilbao, but they failed to maintain their lead against Athletic and lost 2:3.

The goal of former Dunajská Streda player Nikola Krstovič did not help the home team either.
