CAN 2025: Hakimi & Thiaw Suspended – Morocco-Senegal Penalties

The sanctions have fallen. Almost two weeks after the chaotic final of the 2025 African Cup of Nations won by Senegal against Morocco at the end of an electric match, both on the field and in the stands, the CAF Disciplinary Council revealed, this Wednesday evening, the various sanctions against the actors of this psychodrama.

Senegal, most of whose players returned before the end of regulation time due to a penalty whistled in favor of Morocco, is the most penalized. Notably his coach Pape Bouna Thiaw who encouraged them to leave the field.

The coach is thus suspended “for five official CAF matches” and fined 100,000 US dollars (or approximately 83,500 euros) for “unsportsmanlike conduct in violation of the principles of the CAF Disciplinary Code of Fair Play and Integrity, as well as for having brought disgrace to the game”.

Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr are also suspended two official CAF matches for “unsporting behavior towards the referee”.

The CAF Disciplinary Council also imposes a heavy fine of 615,000 dollars (approximately 513,300 euros) on the Senegalese Football Federation “for the inappropriate behavior of its supporters, which has damaged the reputation of the game”, “for the unsporting conduct of their players and members of the technical staff, in violation of the principles of the CAF Disciplinary Code, fairness and integrity” which has “also damaged the reputation of the game “.

The suspensions will not concern the matches of the next World Cup

Morocco, host of the competition and unfortunate finalist, was also sanctioned for the “unsportsmanlike behavior of its players” starting with captain Achraf Hakimi, who received a two-match suspension from CAF, one of which was closed.

His partner in the Atlas Lions selection Ismaël Saibari was sanctioned with three official CAF matches and a fine of 100,000 dollars (approximately 83,500 euros).

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation is fined a total of 315,000 dollars (approximately 260,000 euros) for the “inappropriate behavior of ball boys at the stadium”, for the “inappropriate conduct of its players and members of the technical staff of the national team, who invaded the VAR control zone and obstructed the work of the referee, in violation of the principles of fair play and integrity, as set out in articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code” and “for the use of lasers by its supporters during the match mentioned above”.

Note that the suspension matches only concern matches concerning the CAF zone and do not concern the next World Cup, scheduled for next summer, and where Senegal will be the first opponent of the France team.

It should also be noted that the CAF Disciplinary Council rejected the protest filed by the Moroccan federation concerning alleged violations by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) of articles of the Regulations of the African Cup of Nations.
