Cameroon qualified for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup on Sunday evening. The Indomitable Lions defeated South Africa 1-2 and will take on Morocco in Rabat on January 9, which had already joined the final eight.
In the entertaining first half, both teams claimed the opening goal. For example, Relebohile Mofokeng narrowly shot at the Cameroonian goalkeeper Devis Epassy, who saved the day by finishing his goal in time.
On the other side, Christian Kofane also came close. The former pupil of Erik ten Hag at Bayer Leverkusen was one toe length short of sliding in.
South Africa seized the initiative and appeared to open the scoring through Lyle Foster. The attacker finished well, but after a VAR check it turned out to be offside, the goal was disallowed and the vuvuzelas in the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat sounded less loud.
Cameroon then grew into the match and took the lead about ten minutes before half-time. Junior Tchamadeu luckily got the ball at his feet and shot in at the far post: 0-1.
Shortly after halftime, Kofane seemed to end the game. The goalkeeper neatly headed a measured cross from Mahamadou Nagida into the far corner: 0-2.
South Africa was certainly not inferior in large parts of the match, but the team of national coach Hugo Broos lacked sharpness in front of goal.
In minute 89 Bafana Bafana finally rewarded for his efforts. Evidence Makgopa proved his worth by heading home a neat low cross from Aubrey Modiba at the near post. A hectic final phase followed, but the lions could not be tamed: 1-2.
