It is a ‘mystery’ that Ajax has not yet contacted FC Utrecht for the services of Souffian El Karouani. That states ESPNanalyst Mario Been in the talk show Football talk.
As is known, Ajax is looking for a new left back. Jorrel Hato and Quilindschy Hartman were important candidates, but it is known that they will not come to Amsterdam this winter. El Karouani’s name is also said to have been bandied about at Ajax, but there does not seem to be any concrete interest at the moment.
Been doesn’t understand that. “I still find it a mystery. It has already been mentioned here a few times. If you are really looking for a left back with whom you want to go for years, then you only have to call Utrecht. Then you can pick up El Karouani and you just have a back for the next four or five years. That is really a boy with potential.”
The 25-year-old wing defender, who is again scoring high this season with many assists, has an expiring contract in Utrecht. It will probably not cost much more than three or four million euros this winter. “That’s what I mean,” Been continues. “You can also wait, but then there are several clubs that want him.”
Ajax must strike now, says the former coach of NEC and Feyenoord, among others. “If you are now willing to pay a certain amount for it, you also show that you really want it and that you are busy strengthening your team.”
